Orphan Breakfast House

Orphan Breakfast House has been around for at least a couple of years. So I'm not sure why I discovered only last week that I really ought to go there and try one of the several vegan options on their lunch menu.

The one I decided to order when I went to lunch with my friend Dee was the Crispy Noodles and Crunchy Vegetables, described on the menu as "Pan-fried noodles in house ginger-soy sauce with bean sprouts, julienne carrots, shiitake mushrooms, celery and broccoli, topped with cilantro and scallions." For an extra cost, I added tofu to this flavorful dish.

Other vegan choices on the Orphan lunch menu included:

Single Happiness, consisting of crisp brown rice grilled in ginger-soy with summer vegetables grilled in spicy orange chili oil, to which tofu may be added.

Nuevo Latino Roll Ups, which consists of angel hair pasta grilled in ginger-soy and rolled in a whole wheat tortilla with spring greens, julienne vegetables, and bean sprouts. This dish is served with peanut sauce.

Wok Fried Rice Bowl, which is brown rice stir-fried in soy sauce with broccoli, zucchini, bean sprouts, celery, and carrots, and then topped with shiitake mushrooms.

Latino Black Beans and Brown Rice, consisting of brown rice topped with black beans and salsa, garnished with scallions and cilantro, and served with flour tortillas.

When ordering any of these items, be sure to let the server know you are vegan, in case the plate is garnished with any non-vegan ingredients.

Most of Orphan's breakfast offerings are not vegan. It looks like the only breakfast entrees a vegan could order without having to request changes would be the Bowl of Fruit and possibly the Muslix. I assume they'd serve the Five Dollar Oatmeal without honey, upon request. I notice that tofu can be substituted (presumably for eggs) in their menu items for an additional $2.00 charge, but you'd still want to make sure that there aren't any other non-vegan ingredients in whatever you order.

Orphan Breakfast House is located in East Sacramento at 3440 C Street. Their telephone number is 916-442-7370, and their website address is http://www.orphanbreakfast.com/index.html. The restaurant is open for breakfast every day of the year from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They are open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

I've been there a few times for breakfast since they opened. I tend to forget they're there since they're not on the main drag. The lunch menu sounds good though (and healthy)...might have to pop over there and check it out. Thanks for posting about it! :)

I used to work here, and they have a vegan menu if you ask, which tells you how you can order a lot of breakfast items vegan, by substituting tofu for eggs in the scrambles, also the tamales are vegan and they are amazing, you just have to substitute/minus a few things. :)
